You will be unable to set Stereo Mix as the default audio device after enabling it for the first time

Action

After installing a new sound card, you enable Stereo Mix in the Sound properties dialog box from the Control Panel.

Result

You will be unable to set Stereo Mix as the default audio device.

Cause

This is a known issue in Microsoft Windows Vista.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, close the Sound Properties dialog box, and then reopen it.  You will now be able to set Stereo Mix as the default audio device.
