You may be unable to type Chinese characters for the user name and for the computer name in the OOBE Wizard in certain Chinese-language versions of Windows Vista

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You have a computer on which one of the following language versions of Windows Vista is installed:

Language Culture
Chinese (Hong Kong) ZH-HK
Chinese (Simplified) ZH-CN
Chinese (Traditional) ZH-TW

Additionally, a 2007 Microsoft Office program is installed on the computer. In this scenario, you may be unable able to type Chinese characters for the user name and for the computer name on the Welcome page of the Out Of Box Experience (OOBE) Wizard.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, change the user account name or the computer name after you have completed all the steps in the OOBE Wizard.

To change the computer name, follow these steps:

1. Click StartStart, type sysdm.cpl in the Start Search box, and then click sysdm.cpl in the Programs list.

User If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password. Or, click Continue.

2. Click the Computer Name tab, and then click Change.
3. Under Computer name, delete the old computer name, type a new computer name, and then click OK. If the computer is part of a domain, you will be prompted to provide the name and the password of an account that has permission to rename the computer in the domain.

To rename a user account, follow these steps:

1. Click StartStart, type Control userpasswords in the Start Search box, and then click Control userpasswords in the Programs list.

User If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password. Or, click Continue.

2. Click Change your account name.
3. Type the new name, and then click Change Name.

Notes

• You cannot change the name of the guest account.
• A user name cannot be longer than 20 characters. Additionally, a user name cannot consist completely of periods or of spaces. Finally, it cannot contain any of the following characters:

:
|
<
>
+
=
;
,
?
*
@
