You experience slow performance on a Windows Vista-based computer after you establish a VPN connection

SYMPTOMS

On a Windows Vista-based computer, you experience slow performance after you establish a VPN connection. Additionally, it may take several minutes to open a redirected shell folder. This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:

• Offline files are enabled on the computer.
• Some offline files are cached on the local computer.
• You logged on to the computer when you were offline.
• The VPN connection is based on a slow connection.

This problem usually lasts several minutes and then disappears.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the slow connection detection does not occur immediately after the VPN connection is established. By design, the system periodically checks whether the connection is slow. Therefore, the offline status may remain Online until the next slow connection detection starts. If you first log on to a computer when you are offline, and then you connect to a file server, the system does not immediately check the connection. Instead, the system synchronizes offline files. If the connection is slow, the synchronization may take a long time.

When the system starts the periodical check and detects the connection as slow, the offline status changes to Offline (slow connection). If the synchronization has already started, it does not stop even after the offline status changes to Offline (slow connection). Therefore, the slow performance continues to occur until the synchronization finishes. Then, the next synchronization will not start on the slow connection. Therefore, the problem disappears.
