SYMPTOMS

When you try to rename a folder that is under a shared folder on a Windows Server 2008-based computer or on a Windows Vista SP1-based computer, the rename operation fails. Additionally, at the command prompt, you receive the following error message:

Access is denied

In Windows Explorer, you receive the following error message:

Invalid Device

This problem occurs if you access the shared folder by using a directory symbolic link.

Note You can rename the file by using the symbolic link. However, you cannot rename the folder by using the symbolic link.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Server Message Block (SMB) Service redirector in Windows Server 2008 systems and in Windows Vista SP1 systems does not translate the source of the folder correctly during the rename operation when the source of the folder is included in a UNC path.
