When you try to install Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1 on an Exchange Server 2007-based computer, Setup fails

When you try to install Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1 (SP1) on a Microsoft Exchange Server 2007-based computer, Setup fails. Additionally, you receive the following error message:

Setup previously failed while performing the action “install”. You cannot resume setup by performing the action “BuildtoBuildUpgrade”

CAUSE

This problem may occur because registry subkeys remain from a previously unsuccessful installation. These registry subkeys resemble the following subkey and subkey entries:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange\v8.0\HubTransportRole
“UnpackedVersion”=”8.0.685.25”
“Action”=”Install”
“Watermark”= “Dword:6ea8a4be”

RESOLUTION

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange\v8.0\ MailboxRole

3. In the details pane, right-click Watermark, and then click Delete.
4. In the details pane, right-click Action, and then click Delete.
5. Repeat steps 3 through 4 for the following registry subkeys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange\v8.0\ClientAccessRole
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange\v8.0\ HubTransportRole

Note Removing the Watermark entry lets you resume Setup. However, before you resume Setup, make sure that you view the Setup log to confirm the reason that Setup failed.
