Action

You are working in a project in the Visual Studio 2005 or Visual Studio 2008 IDE, and are using the Configuration Manager to define/use a large number of build configurations.

Result

When dropping down the Configuration combo box, there is no scrollbar to move the lower portion of the list into view. This prevents you from using the mouse to select a configuration not currently visible on the screen.

Cause

This is a design limitation in the Visual Studio IDE.

Resolution

You can use one or more of the following workarounds to resolve this issue.

1. Try repositioning the Configuration Manager dialog box at the top of the screen. This will allow a significant more items to be displayed when you drop down the combo box.

2.  In Visual Studio 2008, you can use the down arrow key on your keyboard to scroll through the list. As you move through each item, it will be displayed in the text portion of the combo box. When the appropriate item is listed in the textbox, press the Enter key to select it.

3. In Visual Studio 2005, you can use the down arrow key on your keyboard to scroll through the list. However, unlike Visual Studio 2008, the current item will not be displayed in the text portion of the combo box. Therefore you must approximate where you are at in the list, and press Enter to select the item. If the item is not the correct one, then use the up or down keys on your keyboard to navigate closer to the desired item.

4. Change your system’s video resolution to a higher setting if possible, which would allow more items to be displayed in the list.
