SYMPTOMS

When you start Microsoft Office Accounting Professional, Microsoft Office Accounting Express, or Microsoft Office Small Business Accounting 2006, you receive the following error message:

Small Business Accounting has encountered a problem and needs to close.

Also, the following error message is logged in the Windows error reporting file:

CAUSE

This problem occurs if a required value in the Microsoft Windows registry was not set or was incorrectly set during the installation of Accounting Professional, Accounting Express, or Small Business Accounting 2006.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, repair the installation of Accounting Professional, Accounting Express, or Small Business Accounting 2006. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Follow the appropriate step:

• For Windows XP:

• If you use Accounting Professional 2008 or Accounting Express 2008, double-click Add or Remove Programs, and then click Change or Remove Programs. In the list of programs, click Microsoft Office Accounting 2008, and then click Change/Remove.
• If you use Accounting Professional 2007 or Accounting Express 2007, double-click Add or Remove Programs, and then click Change or Remove Programs. In the list of programs, click Microsoft Office Accounting 2007, and then click Change/Remove.
• If you use Small Business Accounting 2006, double-click Add or Remove Programs, and then click Change or Remove Programs. In the list of programs, click Microsoft Office Small Business Accounting 2006, and then click Change/Remove.
• For Windows Vista:

• If you use Accounting Professional 2008 or Accounting Express 2008, double-click Programs and Features, click Microsoft Office Accounting 2008, and then click Uninstall/Change.
• If you use Accounting Professional 2007 or Accounting Express 2007, double-click Programs and Features, click Microsoft Office Accounting 2007, and then click Uninstall/Change.
3. In the Microsoft Office Accounting 2008 Setup Wizard, in the Microsoft Office Accounting 2007 Setup Wizard, or in the Microsoft Office Small Business Accounting 2006 Setup Wizard, click Reinstall, and then complete the wizard.
