Upgrade Considerations

• Saved state files are not supported between the Release Candidate and Release Candidate 1 releases of Hyper-V. All virtual machines must be shut down correctly before you install the Hyper-V Release Candidate 1 update.

Note If you have already applied the Hyper-V Release Candidate 1 update, virtual machines that are in the saved state will not start, and you will receive the following error message:

An attempt to initialize the virtual machine saved state failed.

To resolve this issue, select the Delete Save State option for each virtual machine that is currently in the saved state.

• Snapshot files are not supported when you upgrade from the Hyper-V Release Candidate to Hyper-V Release Candidate 1. All virtual machine snapshots must be deleted by using the Delete Snapshot Subtree option for each virtual machine.

Note After you delete the snapshots, and you shut down the virtual machines, the changes that exist within the snapshot files (.avhd files) will merge into the parent virtual hard disk file (.vhd). This operation can take a long time to finish. To determine whether the snapshots have merged into the parent virtual hard disk file, check the directory in which the snapshots are stored, and make sure that no .avhd files exist in the directory.

• If you are running virtual machines on the Hyper-V beta version, follow the steps that are documented in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article after you upgrade to Hyper-V Release Candidate 1:

949222 (/Feedback.aspx?kbNumber=949222/) Virtual machines that were created on the beta version of the Hyper-V role do not start after the Hyper-V role is updated to a later version
